When calculating the value of

The first operation is calculation of the numerator and denominator seperatrely before division. Since there are no fraction bars in technology format, this corresponds to putting the numerator and denominator each in its own set of parenteses, as in
Note that, if the numerator or denominator consisted of a single number, as in
2 - x
3 |
then only one set of parentheses would be necessary, as in (2-x)/3.
