In an important kind of limit discussed in the textbook, we let $x$ approach either $&21$ or $-&21$, by which we mean that we let $x$ get arbitrarily large or let $x$ become an arbitrarily large negative number (instead of approaching some finite number from the left or right). The next example illustrates this.
Consider the following limit: Considera el siguiente límite: The graph of $3x^2 - 5x - 3$ is a concave up parabola and the graphical approach to limits tells us that $\text{lim}x \to +&21} (3x^2 - 5x - 3) = +&21,$ as the graph rises without bound as $x$ becomes arbitrarily large.

Notice that all the terms in the original quadratic with powers less than the highest power (2) "disappear" in the end, meaning that we could have simply ignored them from the start: Observa que todos los términos del cuadrático original con potencias menos que la más grande (2) "desaparecen" al fin y al cabo, significando que podemos haberlas ignorado desde el principio: The above analysis generalizes to limits at infinity of arbitrary polynomials, ratios of polynomials, ratios of powers of polynomials, or arbitrary algebraic combinations of polynomials.
Limits at infinity of expressions with polynomials Límites al infinito de expresiones con polinomios

When calculating the limit at infinity of any ratio of polynomials or constant powers of polynomials, we can ignore all but the terms with the highest power of $x$ in the polynomials that appear.

$\lim_{x \to +&21}(-4x^3 + 1,000x^2) = \lim_{x \to +&21}(-4x^3) = -&21$ $(-4)\cdot&21 = -&21$
$\lim_{x \to -&21}\frac{3x^2 + x - 4}{2x^2 - 10x} = \lim_{x \to -&21}\frac{3x^2}{2x^2} = \lim_{x \to -&21}\frac{3}{2} = \frac{3}{2}$
$\lim_{x \to +&21}\frac{-3x^2 + x - 4}{2x^4 - 10x^2} = \lim_{x \to +&21}\frac{-3x^2}{2x^4} = \lim_{x \to +&21}\frac{-3}{2x^2} = 0$ (See above.)(Ve más arriba.)
$\lim_{x \to -&21}\frac{2x^4 - 10x^2}{-3x^2 + x - 4} = \lim_{x \to -&21}\frac{2x^4}{-3x^2} = \lim_{x \to -&21}-\frac{2x^2}{3} = -&21$
Note Nota Notice that, if we substitute $x = +∞$ in the first example above before eliminating the term of lower power, we get −∞ + ∞, which, like 0/0, is an indeterminate form. Similarly, if we substitute $x = -∞$ before canceling the $x$s in any of the subsequent examples, we get another indeterminate form: ±∞/∞.
