Total from the rate of change Total de la razón de cambio

If we are given only the rate of change $Q'(t)$, of some quantity $Q$ that changes with time (thought of as a function of time $t$), then we can recover almost all of the original function $Q$ by taking an antiderivative:
    Total value of $Q = \int $(Rate of change) $dt = \int Q'(t) dt.$
The only problem is that, when we take the integral, we get an arbitrary constant $C$ whose original value we do not know. For example, suppose that
    $Q(t) = 2t^2 + 5.$
Then, $Q'(t) = 4t$, and taking the antiderivative gives us back
    $Q(t) = \int 4t dt = 2t^2 + C,$
and we have lost the original constant 5! In short:
    $Q(t) = \int 4t dt = 2t^2 + C,$
y ¡hemos perdido la constante original 5! En pocas palabras:
&30Integral
$2t^2 + 5 $$ 4t $$ 2t^2 + C$
&7 How can we recover the "lost" constant"? ¿Cómo podemos recobrar la constante "perdida"?
&8 We need to know additional information about the function; for example, its value at some point, as we see in the following example: Necesitamos saber información adicional sobre la función; por ejemplo su valor a algún punto, como vimos en el siguiente ejemplo:

&7 The number of T-shirts in your wardrobe is growing at a rate of $n(t) = t^2 - 1$ T-shirts per month $t$ months from January 1. On that date you had 10 T-shirts. What is the total number $N(t)$ of T-shirts you have at time $t$?
&8 The total value of $N$ is El valor total de $N$ es
    &5 $N = N(t) = \int (t^2 - 1) dt = \frac{t^3}{3} - t + C.$
To find $C$, we use the additional information that, when $t = 0, N = 10$; that is, $N(0) = 10$: Para hallar $C$, usamos la información adicional que, cuando $t = 0, N = 10$; es decir, $N(0) = 10$:
    $N(0) = \frac{0^3}{3} - 0 + C = 10$
so we have found the value of $C: C = 10$, and so así que hemos hallado el valor de $C: C = 10$, y por lo tanto
    $N(t) = \frac{t^3}{3} - t + 10.$

A peek ahead: integrating (ax + b)n Un vistazo adelante: la integra de (ax + b)n

Recall from the previous tutorial that every time we write down a derivative formula, we get an integral formula for free by writing it in reverse: If the derivative of &11 is &12, then the indefinite integral of &12 is &11 + C: Acuérdate del tutorial anterior que cada vez que escribimos una formula de derivadas, obtenemos gratis una formula de integrales por escribirla al revés: Si la derivada de &11 es &12, entonces, la integral indefinida de &12 es &11 + C:
    &3 &4
    $\frac{d}{dx}\[&11] = &12$ $\int &12 dx = &11 + C$
    $\frac{d}{dx}\[(ax + b)^{n+1}\] = (n + 1)a(ax + b)^n$ $\int (n + 1)a(ax + b)^n dx = (ax + b)^{n+1} + C$ ($a, b, n$ &0s)
    $\frac{d}{dx}\Bigleft[\frac{(ax + b)^{n+1}}{a(n+1)}\Bigright] = (ax + b)^n$ $\int (ax + b)^n dx = \frac{(ax + b)^{n+1}}{a(n+1)} + C$ ($a, b, n$ &0s, $n ≠ -1$)
Notice what we have in the last line above: A formula for the integral of $(ax + b)^n$ (when $n ≠ -1$). In the next tutorial we will see a lot more fromulas like this one.

The next quiz involves cost functions. If $C$ is a cost function, then the associated marginal cost function is its derivative, $C'$.

The marginal cost of producing $x$ neuro-enhancer chips is given by $c(x) = &10$, where $x$ is the number of chips manufactured. The fixed cost (the cost if no items are manufactured) is \$&9.

If an object moves in a straight line, then its position $s$ along the line is a function of time $t$. The derivative, $\frac{ds}{dt}$, of $s$ is its velocity $v$. The derivative of $v$ is its acceleration $a$.

Your cat Papanutski is pursuing an insect and moving along a straight path with a velocity of $v = 2t + 5$ m/sec.
    $s = \int v dt = \int (2t + 5) dt = t^2 + 5t + C.$
&7 Wait! We still don't know the position of the cat as there is some unknown constant $C$ in the formula. What is the value of $C$? ¡Espera!
&8 At time $t = 0$, the position of the cat is Al instante $t = 0$, la pocisión del gato es
    $s_0 = 0^2 + 5(0) + C = C,$
so $C$ can be interpreted as the initial position of the cat: y así $C$ puede ser interpretado como la posición inicial del gato:
    $C = s_0. $Initial position
So, we would need to know the cat's initial position (or the its position at some other value of $t$) in order to know $C$.
    $s = t^2 + 5t + 3.$
On Earth, all objects moving vertically under the force of gravity and experiencing no air resistance accelerate downward at approximately 9.8 meters per second per second, or 9.8 m/sec2.
