Let us start by looking at the definition in the textbook (similar to the online chapter summary)
Relative extrema
Extremo relativo
$f$ has a relative maximum at $x = r$ if there is some interval $(r-h, r+h)$ (even a very small one) for which $f(r) ≥ f(x)$ for all $x$ in $(r-h, r+h)$ for which $f(x)$ is defined. If $f(r) ≥ f(x)$ for every $x$ in the domain of $f$, then we also say that $f$ has an absolute maximum at $x = r$.
Some for you:
Suppose that $f$ has the graph shown: Algunos para ti: Supongamos que $f$ tiene la siguiente gráfica: |
Sometimes it is not a simple matter to tell from the graph Exactly where the local extrema are situated. For instance, try graphing the curve $y = x^3(x^{1/2} -1)$ for $0 ≤ x ≤ 2$, and see if you can tell exactly where the absolute minimum lies. (This example is discussed in the on-line review exercises).
To help us locate extrema accurately, we first classify them into three types, and use calculus to tell us exactly where they are:

Locating candidates for extrema
Ubicando los candidatos al extremos
If $f$ is continuous on its domain and differentiable except at a few isolated points, then its extrema occur among the following types of points.
|
Let $f(x) = $&15, with domain &16. You should use calculus to locate the stationary points below, and plot the graph to help you classify the extrema you obtain.

Now enter the coordinate(s) of each type of extremum, separated by commas if there are more than one, and dne if none.
