Estimating limits numericallyEstimando límites numéricamente
Look at the functionMira la función $f(x) = \frac{x^3 - 8}{x - 2}$
and ask yourself: "What happens to $f(x)$ as $x$ approaches 2?" (Notice that you cannot simply substitute $x = 2$, because the function is not defined at $x = 2$.) The following chart shows the value of $f(x)$ for values of $x$ close to, and on either side of 2: y preguntate: "¿Qué sucede a $f(x)$ cuando $x$ se acerca a 2?"
|
|
|
$x$ | 1.9 | 1.99 | 1.999 | 1.9999 |
$f(x) = \frac{x^3 - 8}{x - 2}$ | 11.4100 | 11.9401 | 11.9940 | 11.9994 |
|
|
2.0001 | 2.001 | 2.01 | 2.1 |
12.0006 | 12.0060 | 12.0601 | 12.6100 |
|
We have left the entry under 2 blank to emphasize that, when calculating the limit of $f(x)$ as $x$ approaches 2, we are not interested in its value when $x$ equals 2. Notice from the table that, the closer $x$ gets to 2 from either side, the closer $f(x)$ gets to 12. We write this as:
Escribimos entonces:
$\lim_{x \to 2} f(x) = 12 \qquad \qquad$
%Q
What if we had gotten different answers when approaching 2 from the left and right?
%A
Suppose, for instance, that we had obtained a table like this for some function $g$:
|
|
|
$x$ | 1.9 | 1.99 | 1.999 | 1.9999 |
$g(x)$ | 11.41 | 11.9401 | 11.9940 | 11.9994 |
|
|
2.0001 | 2.001 | 2.01 | 2.1 |
4.3333 | 4.3330 | 4.3301 | 4.3011 |
|
Notice that the limit appears to be 12 as you approach from the left, but it appears to be $4\sfrac{1}{3};$ if you approach from the right. We therefore write:
$\lim_{x \to 2^-} g(x) = 12 \qquad \qquad$ \t
\\ $\lim_{x \to 2^+} g(x) = 4\sfrac{1}{3} \qquad \qquad$ \t
%Q
Entonces, ¿qué qué tal $\lim_{x \to 2} g(x)$ en este caso?
What then is $\lim_{x \to 2} g(x)$ in this case?
%A
Because the left and right limits disagree, we say that $\lim_{x \to 2} g(x)$ does not exist.
Limits: some terms
Límites: algunos términos
$\lim_{x \to a^-} f(x) = P \qquad \qquad$ \t
\\ $\lim_{x \to a^+} f(x) = Q \qquad \qquad$ \t
If the left limit and the right limit exist and are equal (to $L$, say) then we say that $\text{lim}_{x \to a} f(x)$ exists and equals $L$, and write
\\ $\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = L \qquad \qquad$ \t
Otherwise, $\text{lim}_{x \to a} f(x)$ does not exist.
Si no, $\text{lim}_{x \to a} f(x)$ no existe.
For each table of values, determine the given limits, if they exist, and values of $f$. If a limit does not exist, enter dne as the answer.
First, calculate the missing values in the table below (use the %1 for this task) and then estimate l$\text{lim}_{x \to %3} f(x)$.
It sometimes happens that $f(x)$, rather than approaching any finite number, becomes larger and larger without bound as $x \to a$; that is, if you name any number, no matter how large, $f(x)$ will be even larger than that if $x$ is sufficiently close to $a$. For example, consider
$f(x) = \frac{1}{2 - x}$ %as $x \to 2$:
|
|
|
$x$ | 1.9 | 1.99 | 1.999 | 1.9999 |
$f(x) = \frac{1}{2 - x}$ | $10$ | $100$ | $1,000$ | $10,000$ |
|
|
2.0001 | 2.001 | 2.01 | 2.1 |
$-10,000$ | $-1,000$ | $-100$ | $-10$ |
|
As $x \to 2^-$ we see that $f(x)$ is becoming larger and larger positive without bound, and so we write
$\lim_{x \to 2^-} f(x) = +\infty \qquad \qquad$
As $x \to 2^+$ we see that $f(x)$ is becoming more and more negative without bound, and so we write
$\lim_{x \to 2^+} f(x) = -\infty \qquad \qquad$
As the left- and right-limits do not agree, we say that $\lim_{x \to 2} f(x)$ does not exist.
First, calculate the missing values in the table below (use the %1 for this task) and then estimate the given limits.
Limits at infinityLímites al infinito
In another useful kind of limit, we let $x$ approach either $+\infty$ or $-\infty$, by which we mean that we let $x$ become an arbitrarily large positive or negative number. For example, consider the following table of values for the function
$f(x) = \frac{\sqrt{9x^2 + 1}}{-2x + 3}.$
|
|
|
|
$-100,000$ | $-10,000$ | $-1,000$ | $-100$ | $-10$ |
$%10$ | $%11$ | $%12$ | $%13$ | $%14$ |
|
$10$ | $100$ | $1,000$ | $10,000$ | $100,000$ |
$%15$ | $%16$ | $%17$ | $%18$ | $%19$ |

Notice that the limit appears to be $1.5$ as you approach $-\infty$, and appears to be $-1.5$ as you approach $+\infty$. We therefore write:
$\lim_{x \to -\infty} f(x) = 1.5 \qquad \qquad$ \t
\\ $\lim_{x \to +\infty} f(x) = -1.5 \qquad \qquad$ \t
