Estimating limits graphicallyEstimando límites gráficamente
The following diuscussion is based on Example 4 in Section 3.1 in Applied Calculus or Section 10.1 in Finite Mathematics and Applied Calculus.
Estimating limits graphically Estimación de Límites Gráficamente To decide whether $\lim_{x \to a} f(x)$ exists, and to find its value if it does, use the following procedure: Para decidir si existe $\lim_{x \to a} f(x)$, y para estimar su valor en aquel caso, usa el siguiente procedimiento: | |
Step 1We start by esimtating the right limit, $\lim_{x \to a^+} f(x)$. Position your pencil point on a point of the graph of the function a little to the right of $x = a$.
%Example
In the example illustrated, we are estimating $\lim_{x \to 1} f(x)$, so we have $a = 1$. Therefore, we position our pencil point (the red square %6 in the figure below) on the graph a little to the right of $x = 1$, at, say, $x = 1.5$ as shown:
|
Step 2Move the point along the graph toward $x = a$ from the right and track the $y$-coordinate as you go. The value the $y$-coordinate approaches (if any) is then the limit
$\qquad \lim_{x \to a^+} f(x)$. |
%Example
Continuing with the example we are doing, gradually move your pencil point %6 along the graph towards $x = 1$, and watch the $y$-coordinate as you do so. (Press "Run" under the graph to see this happen.) Notice that the $y$-coordinate approaches 0.5 as $x$ approaches 1 from the right. Therefore,
$\qquad \lim_{x \to 1^+} f(x) = 0.5$. |
Step 3Repeat Steps 1 and 2, but this time starting from a point on the graph to the left of $x = a$, and approach $x = a$ along the graph from the left. The value the $y$-coordinate approaches (if any) is then
$\qquad \lim_{x \to a^-} f(x)$. |
%Example
This time, starting from the left of $x = 1$ as shown, gradually move your pencil point %6 along the graph towards $x = 1$, and watch the $y$-coordinate as you do so. (Press "Run" under the graph to see this happen.) Notice that the $y$-coordinate again approaches 0.5 as $x$ approaches 1 from the right. Therefore,
$\qquad \lim_{x \to 1^-} f(x) = 0.5$. |
If the left and right limits both exist and have the same value $L$, then, as we learned in the %2
$\qquad \lim_{x \to a} f(x) $ exists and equals $L$.existe y es igual a $L$. |
In our example, the left and right limits both exist and equal $0.5$, and so
$\qquad \lim_{x \to 1} f(x) = 0.5$. |
