#[How to do %substitution][Cómo hacer la %substitution]#
#[The technique of %substitution or change of variables is based on the chain rule for derivatives. The method we show here—more mechanical than the method shown in most textbooks—is best illustrated by an example:][La técnica de la %substitution o cambio de variables se basa en la regla de la cadena para derivadas. The expression contains the quantity $(2x^2+1)$ raised to a power. The approach in substitution is to replace quantities like this by a new variable which we call $u,$ (much as in the chain rule for differentiation) and then convert the integral into a simpler one involving $u$ instead of $x.$.][ La expresión contiene la cantidad $(2x^2+1)$ elevado a una potencia.
#[Step][Paso]# 1
#[Decide what to use for $u.$][Decide qué usar para $u.$]# #[There is no hard and fast rule for what to use as $u,$ but what often works is the following:
|
$u = 2x^2+1$ | |
#[Step][Paso]# 2
#[Calculate the derivative of $u,$ and then solve for $dx.$][Calcula la derivada de $u,$ y a continuación despeja a $dx.$]# #[We put this calculation in a little box to separate it from the calculation of the integral.][Ponemos este cálculo en una pequeña caja para separarla del cálculo de la integral.]# |
|
|
#[Step][Paso]# 3
#[Substitute the expression for $u$ in the original integral, and also substitute for $dx.$][Sustituya la expreción para $u$ en la integral original, y también sustituya para $dx.$]# #[
|
$\int 5x\color{red}{(2x^2+1)}^{-3}\color{red}{dx} = \int 5x\color{red}{u}^{-3} \color{red}{\frac{1}{4x}du}$
#[Step][Paso]# 4
#[Eliminate the variable $x,$ if it is still present, leaving an integral in $u$ only. ][Elimina la variable $x$ si todavía está presente, dejando una integral con una sola variable $u.$]# #[Often, as happens here, all the $x$s will cancel leaving an expression in $u$ only. (Sometimes, they do not—see below).
|
$\int 5\color{red}{\hstrike{x}}u^{-3} \frac{1}{4\color{red}{\hstrike{x}}}du = \int 5u^{-3} \frac{1}{4}du$
#[Step][Paso]# 5
#[Simplify the integral, if possible. ][Simplifica la integral si es posible.]# #[Here, we can sneak the constant $5/4$ outside the integral sign.][Aquí, podemos escabullirse la constante $5/4$ fuera del signo integral.]# |
$\int 5u^{-3} \frac{1}{4}du=\frac{5}{4}\int u^{-3} du$
#[Step][Paso]# 6
#[Evaluate the simplified integral.][Evalua la integral simplificada.]# #[Important: Do not substitute back for $u$ until after this step. ][Importante: No sustituya para $u$ en términos de $x$ hasta después este paso.]# |
|
|
#[Final step][Paso final]#
#[Substitute back for $u$ to obtain the result.][Sustituya para $u$ en términos de $x$ para obtener el resultado.]# |
$-\frac{5\color{red}{u}^{-2}}{8}+C = -\frac{5(2x^2+1)^{-2}}{8}+C$ |
-
$\int %11\.dx.$
-
$\int %10\.dx.$
-
$\int %30\.dx.$
- Take $u$ to be the expression that appears in the exponent.
- Elige para $u$ la expresión que aparece en el exponente.
#[When the xs do not cancel][Cuando las x no cancelan]#
%Q #[This is all very well, but what do I do if the $x$s do not cancel?][Todo esto está muy bien, pero ¿qué debo hacer si las $x$ no cancela?]#%A #[Let us go through one such example and see...][Vamos a través de un tal ejemplo para ver...]# #[Now, we must eliminate any $x$s that remain, so we do the following:][A continuación, debemos eliminar cualquier $x$s que quedan, así que hacemos lo siguiente:]#
-
#[Go back to the equation that gives u as a function of x, and solve for x.][Vuelve a la ecuación que da u como una función de x, y despejar a x:]#
Now substitute this expression for x in the integral and complete the calculation:
#[Shortcuts: Integrals of expressions involving (ax + b)][Atajos: Integrales de expresiones involucrando (ax + b)]#
#[If you look again at the the very first quiz above: $\int %11\.dx,$ notice that $u = %50$ has the form $ax+b$ for constants $a, b$ and that substituting for $dx$ just had the effect of dividing the eventual answer by the coefficient of $x$ in $ax + b = %50.$ This observation leads to the following rule, which allows us to simply write down the antiderivative in cases where we would otherwise need the substitution $u=ax+b:$][Si te fijas de nuevo en el primero concurso arriba: $\int %11\.dx,$ observa que $u = %50$ tiene la forma $ax+b$ con constantes $a, b$ y que sustituyendo para $dx$ solo tuvo el efecto de dividir la respuesta eventual por el coeficiente de $x$ en $ax + b = %50.$ Esta observación conduce a la siguiente regla que nos permite simplmente escribir la antiderivada en los casos en que de otro modo necesitaríamos la sustitución $u = ax + b:$]#
