Setting up systems of linear equations from given information

In all applications of linear equations, we follow the same general strategy:

#[Step 2 above—using the information given to obtain equations in the %unknowns—is often the most difficult: Here we consider two kinds of real life situations that lead to systems of equations.][Paso 2 arriba—usar la información dada para obtener ecuaciones en las %unknowns—es frecuentemente el más dificil: Aquí consideramos dos tipos de situaciones reales que conducen a sistemas de ecuaciones.]#

• #[Applications in which all the given information can be tabulated][Aplicaciones en las que toda la información dada puede ser tabulada]#
• #[Applications in which some of the given information must be translated directly from words into equations][Aplicaciones en las que parte de la información dada se debe traducir directamente de las palabras en ecuaciones]#

Applications in which all the given information can be tabulated

Following is a generic example of this type.

#[Solution][Solución]#

#[Let's follow the above strategy:][Vamos a seguir la estrategia anterior:]#

• #[Identify and label the %%unknowns.][Identifica y etiqueta las %%unknowns.]#
#[We are asked to find the number of items of Product A and Product B the company can produce:][Se nos pide encontrar el número de artículos del Producto A y del Producto B que la empresa puede producir:]#
%%Let $x$ #[be the number of items of Product A.][número de artículos del Producto A.]# \\ %%Let $y$ #[be the number of items of Product B.][el número de artículos del Producto B.]#
• #[Use the information given to obtain equations in the %%unknowns.][Usa la información dada para obtener ecuaciones en las %%unknowns.]#
#[As suggested, we first tabulate this information. The most convenient way to do this is to have the products corresponding to the unknowns along the top, with a "Total" column on the right:][Como se sugirió, primero tabulamos esta información. La manera más conveniente de hacerlo es colocar los productos correspondientes a las incógnitas en la parte superior, con una columna de "Total" a la derecha:]#

#[Component 1: As we have $x$ items of Product A each requiring 2 units of Component 1 and $y$ items of Product B each requiring 4 units of Component 1, we are using a total of $2x + 4y$ units of this conponent, and this must equal tht total available:][Componente 1: Como tenemos $x$ artículos del Producto A que requieren 2 unidades del Componente 1 cada uno y $y$ artículos del Producto B que requieren 4 unidades del Componente 1 cada uno, estamos usando un total de $2x + 4y$ unidades de este componente, y esto debe ser igual al total disponible:]#
  $2x + 4y = 24$.
#[Notice that the coefficients are just the entries in the first row of the table!][¡Observa que los coeficientes son solo las entradas en la primera fila de la tabla!]#
#[Component 2: By the same reasoning applied to Component 2, we can use the second row of the table for our second equation:][Componente 2: Por el mismo razonamiento aplicado al Componente 2, podemos utilizar la segunda fila de la tabla para nuestra segunda ecuación:]#
  $5x + 3y = 25$.
• To solve this system, use the %%gjtool:
#[Just enter the values as they appear in the above table and press "Reduce completely":][Simplemente ingrese los valores tal como aparecen en la tabla anterior y presione "Reducir completamente":]#
  #[][]#
#[The result is shown at the bottom of the image. Notice that the new coefficients are][El resultado se muestra en la parte inferior de la imagen. Observa que los nuevos coeficientes son]#
#[Translating back to equations gives][Traduciendo de nuevo a ecuaciones obtenemos]#
  $1x + 0y = 2$ \\ $0x + 1y = 5$
  #[or simply][o simplemente]#
  $x = 2$ \\ $y = 5$.
#[So, we have solved the system! (See the %%gjtut (next tutorial) for details on the magic used to accomplish this.)][¡Así que hemos resuelto el sistema! (Consulta el %%gjtut (próximo tutorial) para obtener más detalles sobre la magia utilizada para lograrlo).]#

The following example is similar to Example 6 of Section 3.1 in Finite Mathematics or Section 4.1 in Finite Mathematics and Applied Calculus.

Applications in which words must be directly translated into equations

#[Sometimes, the information given cannot all be tabulated, and instead, we see statements that refer to the unknowns in other ways. For instance, if $x$ is the number of oranges and $y$ is the number of apples, then we might see something like "There are twice as many apples as oranges."

#[We can now apply our skills to more kinds of applications:][Ahora podemos aplicar nuestras habilidades a más tipos de aplicaciones:]#
